My top tips for navigating LinkedIn
Many people assume that LinkedIn is purely an online CV - they are WRONG!
LinkedIn is a pivotal platform for job searching, network building, researching for a career change and much more. This valuable resource is an essential weapon for any graduate or job seeker at any stage in their career. In my role as a mentor and career coach I always encourage my clients to use this platform on a daily basis. However, to be successful in your navigation of LinkedIn see below for my tips and tricks:
1) GET YOUR SETTINGS RIGHT:
This is essential if you are to benefit from the platform. On the tool bar click on ‘Me’ and then select ‘Settings and Privacy’ in the drop-down menu. Review each option – with particular focus on ‘Job seeking preferences’. For example, check that you have agreed to the option to let recruiters know that you’re open to opportunities.
2) SET UP JOB ALERTS:
By doing this you will automatically get notifications from companies you would like to work for, as and when they arise. This will increase your efficiency and time spent on the platform. To do this go to ‘Jobs’ on the top tool bar and select ‘Job alert’. You can set up multiple each with slightly different criteria.
3) USE EASY APPLY:
This is a quick and effective way to apply for jobs. If you choose this option you MUST follow step 4 (below) to increase your chance of success!
4) CONNECT WITH RELEVANT PEOPLE:
If you are using easy apply make sure that you have connected with the person who has posted the job. I would also recommend sending a short InMail Message thanking them for connecting with you and one or two lines from your elevator pitch that are relevant for the role you are applying for. Every little helps!
5) NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK:
A little statistic for you – 53% of people who networked with former colleagues secured their next job via these connections. Spend time connecting with everyone you used to work with, contacts you met in meetings and at events and even with relevant people in industries you would like to work in. Be brave and reap the rewards!
6) JOIN RELEVANT GROUPS:
There are relevant groups for all industries. You need to find them, join them and engage with them through commenting and liking.
7) E-LEARNING:
LinkedIn is also an educational platform with a multitude of seminars, webinars and courses. Use these to strengthen your skillset and increase your knowledge of a particular field or industry.
Well, there it is – my top tips and tricks for navigating LinkedIn to increase the chances of success in your job search. Good luck.
